Red Tide Mid-Week Update for December 12, 2018

Current Conditions
A patchy bloom of the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, persists in Southwest Florida. On the East Coast, K. brevis cells were present but not at bloom concentrations. In Northwest Florida, K. brevis was not observed. Additional details are provided below.

• Over the past week in Southwest Florida, K. brevis was observed in samples from and/or offshore of Pinellas to Collier counties, excluding Hillsborough County. “High” concentrations (>1,000,000 K. brevis cells per liter) were not observed, although “medium” concentrations occurred at two sites each in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Relative to last week, K. brevis concentrations decreased in all sampled Southwest Florida counties.
• Along the Florida East Coast over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background concentrations in Palm Beach County.

Fish Kills
In Southwest Florida, fish kill reports were received for Manatee, Sarasota, and Collier counties. More detailed information is available at http://myfwc.com/fishkill.

Respiratory Irritation
Respiratory irritation was reported over the past week in Southwest Florida (in Manatee, Sarasota, Lee, and Collier counties).

Forecast
Forecasts by the USF-FWC Collaboration for Prediction of Red Tides for Pinellas to northern Monroe counties predict variable transport of surface waters with net western movement, and net southeastern movement of subsurface waters in most areas over the next four days.
